INTERNET TECHNOLOGY IN AN ISOLATED COMMUNITY

This is a website that describes a project carried out by Andrew Eccleston as a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellow.

Iceland is an island community with a population of about 280,000 lying just outside the Arctic Circle. It is heavily dependent on a handful of key industries - principally fishing and tourism. Despite this isolation and apparent vulnerability, Iceland is a very successful nation with a rich culture and excellent standard of living for its people. In common with every other nation, Iceland has embraced the Internet and there is no doubt that this technology has helped to mitigate some of the effects of isolation.

This project aimed to meet up with some of the Icelandic organisations that are actively using the Internet and learn about how it has helped to build new relationships within the community and between Iceland and the rest of the world.
